Faculty of Applied Science Equity Survey

UBC’s Employment Equity Policy includes the objective to build a workforce that is representative of the pool of potential candidates with appropriate qualifications, including women, native people, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Applicants to faculty positions at UBC Applied Science are asked to complete the following survey. Your participation is voluntary and anonymous. The information will not be used to determine eligibility for employment. The answers will be collated to provide data that can assist us in understanding the diversity of our applicant pool and identifying potential barriers to the employment of designated equity group members. This survey takes only a minute to complete. You may self-identify in one or more of the designated equity groups. You may decline to identify in any or all of the questions by choosing “not disclosed.”

Designated Groups under Canada's Employment Equity Act:
  • Aboriginal persons (native people): North American Indians or members of a First Nation, Métis or Inuit. North American Indians or members of a First Nation include status, treaty or registered Indians as well as non-status and non-registered Indians.
  • People of colour (visible minorities): persons (other than Aboriginal persons, defined above) who are non-white in colour or race, regardless of place of birth or citizenship. Members of ethnic or national groups (for example, Portuguese, Italian, Greek) are not considered racially visible. Examples for people of colour include: Black--Non-white Latin American (including indigenous persons from Central and South America)--East Asian (for example, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Polynesian)--South Asian/East Indian (for example, Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan)--Southeast Asian (for example, Cambodian, Filipino, Laotian, Vietnamese)--West Asian/Arab (for example, Afghan, Iranian)--Persons of mixed origin (for example, with one parent in one of the groups listed above).
  • Persons with disabilities: persons who have a long-term or recurring physical, mental, sensory, psychiatric, or learning impairment, and who believe that either (1) the disability reduces the amount or kind of activity they can do at work, or (2) an employer or potential employer is likely to consider that the disability limits their employment opportunities. (Impairments may be visible or invisible; examples include: impairment of vision/mobility/hearing/speech, chronic illness and learning/comprehension disabilities.)
  • Women
Sexual orientation and gender identity: While the federal government requires information based on the four designated groups, the University’s employment equity statement also includes sexual orientation (such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, two-spirited, queer) and gender identity (such as transsexual, transgender, gender variant).
