Shine a Light on Your Learning: A Self-Directed Assessment Tool

Is there an area of your practice that you sense is in need of a little attention? This may be because you don’t encounter it every day. Or perhaps your ‘tried and tested’ approach isn’t working quite as well these days. Or maybe it’s that nagging issue that always seems to end up at the bottom of your to-do list. Or you've heard about a new development and are curious to explore it further.

Imagine you have a flashlight that allows you to shine a light on this area of your practice. By shining a light into that corner of your practice, you will gain a better understanding of the issue. Focusing your efforts on this area will give you the most ‘bang for your buck’ when it comes to spending time enhancing your practice. And let’s be honest, your time is precious these days.

What Can I Expect from This Tool?
Complete this tool in four steps

Think of this tool as your coach. Although it doesn’t wear a tracksuit or shout encouragement from the sidelines, its role is to support you in being exceptional in what you do. Initially, this tool will guide you through a self-directed assessment of an area(s) of practice you may be uncomfortable with or wish to improve upon. Next, it will help you develop an action plan to address that area of practice, and – after you have implemented your plan – guide you through evaluating the effect of your plan.

Upon completion, you will be able to:
1. Reflect on an area of practice where you feel challenged or uncomfortable
2. Identify available sources of information for conducting a self-directed assessment
3. Formulate an action plan for practice/quality improvement
4. Determine the effectiveness of a practice/quality improvement plan
5. Describe how to use health data or information for practice improvement

Time Commitment
Variable (depends on your topic). Estimated time to complete = up to 8 hours.
Note: The activity does not need to be completed in one sitting. You can save your work and continue at a later date.

At the end of each "step," input the hours spent completing that step in the space provided at the bottom of the page. After you click on the submit button in the last section of the tool, your total hours spent will be calculated and credits earned will be forwarded to The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) for processing. Credits will be forwarded to CFPC on a monthly basis. Please note that credits will be uploaded into your Mainpro+ "holding area" and will not count towards your cycle total until CFPC's Impact Assessment has been completed and submitted.
